Georgios

Byzantijns boekverluchter, werkzaam in Constantinopel aan het einde van de 10e eeuw, waar hij één van de verluchters was van het beroemde Menologium, vervaardigd voor keizer Basileios II (regeerde van 976 tot 1025). Dit Menologium is een van de pronkvolste Byzantijnse handschriften die tot op de dag van vandaag bewaard is gebleven. Het bevat – en dat is uniek – in onopvallend klein schrift in de randen naast elk van de 430 miniaturen de naam van de verluchter.

Het werk van de in totaal acht verluchters is van grote homogeniteit, hoewel toch ook nuanceverschillen bespeurbaar zijn. Volgens Weitzmann 1947, p. 200 was Venturi 1901-1940 de eerste die trachte de stijl van iedere meester afzonderlijk te definiëren, en hoewel zijn bevindingen niet door eenieder werden gedeeld en deze door latere geleerden  werden bekritiseerd, is tot op heden (lees tot 1947) geen poging gedaan tot een revisie te komen.

Venturi komt tot de volgende definities (tekst in het Engels, overgenomen uit Weitzmann 1947, p. 200): “Pantoleon creates long figures and organizes the highlights so that they follow the motion of the drapery, but at the same time he is not consistent in his means of expression, and makes the figures now strait and geometrical (strette e geometrizzate), now jutting out and full (larghe e piene). Michael Blachernites is characterized as  “rozzo e materiale, grosso nel segno, largo e tondo, di proporzioni maggiori”, Georgios as a painter who loves green shadows, round schoulders and preders motions which make the figures pirouette, and Michael as an artist who depicts wry faces. To Menas is ascribed a predilection for classical elements seen in his representation of the Birth of the Virgin. Nestor is supposed to be more individualistic thanthe others, showing a greater variety of draperies and costumes, while Symeon Blachernites is considered as not very elegant and as seeking forced effects.“
