Leonardo Bellini

Italiaans boekverluchter, geboren ca 1423, werkzaam in Venetië van ongeveer 1443 tot ongeveer 1485. Neef van de paneelschilders Giovanni Bellini en Gentile Bellini, en hun vader Jacopo Bellini. 

Italian book illuminator, born about 1423, worked in Venice from about 1443 to about 1485. Cousin of the panel painters Giovanni Bellini and Gentile Bellini, and their father Jacopo Bellini.

Dat hij verantwoordelijk is voor de verluchting van een belangrijk Hebreeuws manuscript, de Rotschild Miscellany (Jeruzalem, Israel Museum, ms. 180/51) is betwist, maar wordt volgens London-New York, p. 39 en nr. 27 ondersteund door de vergelijking met het frontispice dat hij schilderde in een incunabel uit 1478. 

That he is responsible for the illumination of an important Hebrew manuscript, the Rothschild Miscellany (Jerusalem, Israel Museum, ms. 180/51) has been disputed, but according to London-New York, p. 39 and no. 27 supported by the comparison with the frontispiece he painted in a 1478 incunabula.

Nadat Leonardo Bellini tientallen jaren uitsluitend manuscripten verluchtte, hield hij zich aan het einde van zijn loopbaan toch ook bezig met het versieren van gedrukte werken.

After having only illuminated manuscripts for decades, Leonardo Bellini also devoted himself to the decoration of printed works at the end of his career.

De randen van Bellini kenmerken zich door bloemmotieven en gouden stippen, ontleend aan Ferrarese manuscripten als de fameuze Bijbel van Borso d’Este.

The edges of Bellini are characterized by floral motifs and gold dots, borrowed from Ferrarese manuscripts such as the famous Borso d'Este Bible.
